Bietigheim-Bissingen Park

Overland Park, Kansas

A Park Rooted in Connection

SFS led the design of Bietigheim-Bissingen Park, a 6.5-acre sister-city park located at the northeast corner of 159th and Quivira Streets in Overland Park, Kansas. The park celebrates the relationship between Overland Park and its German sister city, Bietigheim-Bissingen, translating cultural identity into a meaningful public space.

The vision for the park emerged through a robust community and neighborhood engagement process. Listening to local voices helped define priorities and guided the inclusion of amenities that support gathering, play, learning, and reflection.

Layered Experiences for Community

The park offers a variety of experiences for visitors of all ages, including a shelter, restroom, playground, bocce ball court, reading nook, open lawn, gazebo, and a small parking lot. An elevated boardwalk weaves through the landscape, encouraging exploration and connection to nature.

The playground integrates educational and artistic panels in both English and German, featuring imagery from both cities and fostering cultural exchange for younger visitors. Throughout the park, interpretive signage—developed with assistance from local students—adds another layer of storytelling and connection.

Design, Art, and Cultural Expression

Rather than replicating traditional German elements, the design interprets the character of Bietigheim-Bissingen through form, material, and spatial organization. Influences such as geometric planning patterns, integration of art, and a strong relationship to water are thoughtfully embedded throughout the park.

At the heart of the park stands a striking limestone sculpture by renowned German artist Dieter Kränzlein. Carved from shell limestone, the piece serves as both a visual anchor and a symbolic connection to the sister city. A custom-designed water table acts as both a play feature and an educational installation, modeled after an aerial view of Bietigheim-Bissingen’s historic town center and inviting hands-on interaction.

As visitors move through the park, its meaning unfolds gradually. The design avoids literal translation, allowing the spirit of Bietigheim-Bissingen to emerge through experience—creating a place that is both locally grounded and globally connected.
