This new campus-style public safety complex supports the Lenexa Fire Department’s public safety mission in a rapidly growing suburban community. The three main functions of the 31,000 square foot facility are fire protection, training and police operations. The fire station includes living quarters for up to 10 firefighters and EMS personnel, three drive-thru apparatus storage bays and firefighter support. The training center comprises interior academic and exterior physical training spaces. The police function includes command personnel offices, break room, toilet/showers for patrol officers and short-term holding for arrestees. The different functions unite around a central exterior entry plaza, which evokes imagery of the surrounding natural landscape within the context of a municipal function. Glazing provides views and provides natural light to illuminate and animate the space.
