In 2005, Holy Angels Parish selected SFS Architecture to develop a master plan for their existing 40-acre site. Six options were prepared, and a final option selected for presenting to the parish. SFS worked with the building committee to define the first phase of construction and prepared drawings and materials to use in the capital campaign. Upon successful completion of the capital campaign, SFS finalized the design, completed construction documents and facilitated bids to construct the project.
The first phase of the master plan is a 17,000 square foot church and narthex. Holding 800 people for worship, the 65-foot wood ceiling and heavy timber framing creates a strong sense of grandeur when entering the worship space. This large volume is filled with indirect natural light that radiates from nine skylights above. The plan of the church is organized by a strong sense of procession. As the parishioner passes through different spaces on the way to the sanctuary, the lighting adjusts from bright at the entry to dim just as you enter the worship space, where your eyes immediately focus on the sanctuary bathed in natural light. This control of light facilitates the spiritual transition from the busy distractions of the world to the quiet focus needed in worship.
