Our approach to public safety design prioritizes the critical relationship between facility operations and first responder effectiveness. We understand that efficient deployment leads to faster response times, which is why we carefully analyze apparatus bay configurations, circulation patterns, and direct access routes from living quarters to vehicles. Our designs incorporate hazard-based zone concepts that control the movement of contamination throughout facilities, protecting first responder health while maintaining operational efficiency. We work closely with departments to evaluate site locations based on service area coverage, traffic patterns, and response time optimization, ensuring every design decision supports the mission-critical nature of public safety operations.
— Kwame Smith, Public Safety Practice leader and Principal | Managing PartnerI’m excited about the future of public safety design. We’ve built a dedicated team committed to designing stations that meet the evolving needs of today’s professionals.
Recognizing the occupational health challenges facing today's first responders, we design facilities that prioritize behavioral health and physical wellbeing. Our stations feature decontamination transition spaces, gender-neutral facilities that promote privacy and sleep equity, and individual sleeping rooms with controllable environmental conditions. We integrate wellness amenities including two-story fitness facilities, outdoor training areas, and natural light throughout living spaces to support mental health and create healthy work environments. Advanced MEP systems with redundant air filtration, heated apparatus bay floors, and specialized exhaust systems ensure long-term sustainability while controlling exposure to harmful contaminants.
Our public safety facilities serve as visible symbols of community commitment to safety and security. We create welcoming civic architecture using durable materials that convey permanence while reducing long-term maintenance costs. Through community-oriented design principles, we incorporate shared spaces, training facilities, and public amenities that strengthen relationships between departments and the communities they serve. We practice common-sense sustainability, pursuing LEED certification and energy-efficient systems that demonstrate responsible stewardship of public resources. Our collaborative process includes extensive stakeholder engagement to build consensus and ensure facilities support each agency's mission, vision, and culture while addressing neighborhood context and creating good neighbor policies that respect surrounding communities.
