The Kansas City Municipal Courthouse’s green roof is a covered patio for employees to gather for events or lunch, weather permitting. Screen walls are utilized as supports for a trellis to create shade and a patio area. The trellis consists of painted steel columns and beams with galvanized metal panels spanning between. The pattern in the screens celebrates the court’s transition toward technology-driven interactions and a paperless system. The openings in the trellis are sized 8.5 inches by 11 inches to match the size of standard letter paper — paper that once inundated the courthouse from years of transactions.
The patio was extended past the trellis to create a grilling area. Walls are open on the sides to allow views of the surrounding buildings, including direct views of the relief sculptures at City Hall to the west. A gravel ballast in earth tone colors helps extend the natural environment.
