Transformation of traditional library space into a dynamic, technology-friendly student learning commons

Traditional library space within the existing Ellis Library building was transformed to provide a dynamic, technology friendly learning commons for University of Missouri students. The James B. Nutter Family Information Commons provides a range of spaces for individual study and collaboration, including designated group study rooms, a centrally located collection of individual study spaces with integrated data connections available for device interface and a series of group study spaces arranged to exterior views and privatized by translucent glass panels. A mix of furniture and workstations is utilized to create the various spaces, including lounge seating, benches, “coffee bar” seating, standup stations, office style workstations, small round tables with chairs and larger tables for group study activities. Students have access to hardwired library computers, docking station, and wireless technology. A central reference desk and resource area are directly accessible from the building’s lobby.
