Lee's Summit City Hall

Lee's Summit, Missouri

SFS Architecture provided programming and master planning services for Lee’s Summit, Missouri’s city hall municipal complex. Subsequent to voter approval in 2002, SFS was retained to provide complete architectural services. The scope of the 76,000 square foot city hall includes multiple city departments, council chambers, public service lobbies, outdoor civic plaza and adjacent four level parking structure.

SFS utilized a highly interactive design process among city staff, elected officials and citizens. The design of the city hall reflects the city’s desire to create a citizen centered, service-oriented atmosphere, and to provide inspiring workspaces for city staff. Of highest importance was the need for the building and parking structure to relate to the historic context of downtown Lee’s Summit. This goal was achieved while still maintaining the appropriate civic image using materials, scale, detail and massing. The design also allows for future development of exterior public spaces for civic functions. The facility has an inviting and open image while still incorporating the latest in building security.

SFS was also able to successfully integrate state‐of‐the‐art audio and visual equipment seamlessly within the building. Sustainable design features include solar water heating, occupant sensor lighting and mechanical systems, detained storm water for irrigation, and recycled materials.
