Fire station design serves as prototype, supports emergency response in mixed-use development area

The design of Lawrence Fire Station No. 2, located in a mixed-use area, respects the style and scale of the surrounding residential development. SFS, in association with Sabatini Architects, worked with the City of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire and Medical Department representatives to understand space and functionality needs of fire and EMT emergency response protocols. The completed three-bay station replaces an existing station and was designed as a prototype for other new Lawrence-area stations. It serves as a “working home” for 12 firefighters and emergency medical technicians. Designed for future flexibility, the station has adequate apparatus storage for present and future vehicles and gender separations in the sleeping and toilet/shower areas. Support facilities in the apparatus bay functions include decontamination, a SCBA tank refill station and the department’s Confined Space Extraction Unit.
