SFS Architecture Receives 2026 Preserve Missouri Award for Truman Train Depot Restoration

May 14, 2026

SFS Architecture received a 2026 Preserve Missouri Award from the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation for the restoration of the historic Truman Train Depot in Independence, Missouri. Presented at the 46th Annual Honor Awards ceremony in Jefferson City, the award recognizes projects advancing historic preservation across the state. Morris Heide, Director of Parks and Recreation for Independence, accepted the award on behalf of the project team, alongside SFS Heritage Practice Leader and Principal Dana Gould and Senior Principal Kerry Newman. Originally constructed in 1913 and known for its connection to Harry S. Truman and his Whistle Stop campaign tours, the depot underwent a multi-year restoration completed in 2025. SFS Architecture’s work preserved the building’s historic Spanish Revival character while introducing accessibility improvements, updated building systems, and revitalized interior spaces to support the depot’s continued use for generations to come.
