  • CJCFPD Fire Training Facility

    Blue Springs, MO

Fire training facility design created from adapted manufacturing facility.

Transform an existing manufacturing facility into a modern, high-tech training center for firefighters and EMS personnel.

SFS worked with Central Jackson County Fire Protection District (CJCFPD) stakeholders to develop the training, space needs and maintenance requirements, evaluate potential sites and existing buildings, and determine which would accommodate the district’s current and long-term needs and most responsibly use taxpayer dollars. The design team coordinated with each of the district’s user groups so furniture, finishes and lighting supported the specialized training activities of each.

The renovated facility includes a 125-seat tiered, U-shaped lecture room, flexible breakout classrooms, office space, wellness center assist with physical readiness, four bay areas for all district vehicle repairs/maintenance, storage, and a simulated Command Center Training and EMS anatomical condition simulator. Technology is integrated throughout the education spaces, including drop-down projection, backlit glass marker boards and full A/V capabilities to support demonstrations and presentations. Within a limited budget, the team created a dramatic transformation by incorporating economical design features, including simple industrial materials such as corrugated metal light clouds in the entry and lecture hall backdrop. Durable, low-maintenance materials and finishes, a timeless color palette, and master planning for future growth provides a facility that will serve district needs for many years. The facility also provides an additional revenue stream for the district by allowing other community organizations and fire departments to rent the training space.
